We’re proud to bring you part three of our coverage of the amazing items that Weta Workshop had at San Diego Comic-Con 2013. This update comes from the most recent newsletter that landed in many of our in-boxes, bringing information regarding the pre-order for the Azog on Warg statue, as well as details on when all the items that were at Comic-Con will go up for order. Starting next Monday, July 29th in the US/Europe and Tuesday, July 30th in Australia/New Zealand, those interested in adding Azog will be able to do so. Azog is going to be limited 500 pieces world-wide and comes in with a price tag of $699. Do not wait to order this statue, as he’s going to be the most limited one so far in The Hobbit line! As you saw from the Comic-Con coverage in Part 1 and Part 2, Azog is no small statue. He’s going to come in at 2 feet long, 17 inches tall, and an amazing 35 lbs with a steel structure on the inside to ensure he can hold the pose.
This newsletter also gave information on when to look for many of the new items that did not go up for order during Comic-Con. If you’re waiting on Radagast, Thranduil, Tauriel, Gloin, etc then you will need the following information to plan out your spending:
Watch out for these items during the following months:
- Arwen miniature figure – August
- Bert the Troll – August
- 26 Gandalf’s Cutting Hobbit Hole – August

Our friends from The Bridge Direct had another great showing at Comic-Con this year with more of their great figures for The Hobbit Trilogy. This year at their booth The Bridge Direct had almost every new figure we’re going to see in the fall when wave 2 of their line ships. We got new 6″ figures of Yazneg, Radagast the Brown, Bolg, and Azog. This Azog figure is different than the Comic-Con 2013 Exclusive Figure. The 3.75″ line of figures had the rest of the Dwarves which we did not get in wave one and Thranduil to complete what they had at the booth. The 3.75″ line is also getting a couple of new multi-packs one will have all of the Dwarves and the one at Comic-Con is a Mirkwood pack coming with Thranduil Tauriel, Legolas, Fili, and Kili. There is a Beorn figure coming but as of right now he will have to remain a mystery for just a little while longer. We also get to see a Legolas figure in the new packaging that we will see for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Overall, as I said The Bridge Direct had another great Comic-Con and I can’t wait to see wave 2 hit the shelves.
Empire’s Desolation of Smaug edition cover is here, and it’s pretty nice. Interesting that it’s all elves, featuring Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly), Thranduil (Lee Pace) and Legolas (Orlando Bloom). Come to think of it, the teaser trailer had a heavy focus on elves too. Some are suggesting that this might indicate we should expect a much larger elven presence in Desolation of Smaug as a result.
Anyway, Empire promises many more insights into this second installment of The Hobbit — all accrued on set in New Zealand. How many? More “than you can shake a wizard’s staff” at apparently. Continue reading “Say hello to Empire’s Desolation of Smaug edition!”
A couple of weekends ago, we dedicated an entire, spoiler-filled session to exploring the new character Tauriel, the Silvan captain of guards that Jackson, Boyens and Walsh are introducing into their adaptation of The Hobbit. .
For those who couldn’t attend, here’s a log. And a reminder: tomorrow (Saturday June 22 at 6pm EDT) we’ll be discussing the Desolation of Smaug trailer. Continue reading “Hall of Fire chat log: Tauriel, captain of guards”

With the hot and heavy casting news recently people are furiously trying to fill in un cast characters with likely candidates. Former Doctor Who star David Tennant is once again being mentioned as possibly playing Thranduil the Elvenking in the forthcoming Hobbit movie.
Tennant just recently announced that he and former costar Catherine Tate are to appear in a production of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, which opens in London’s Wyndham Theatre from 16th May 2011. They will be playing the roles of combative lovers Beatrice and Benedick in the play, being directed by Bush Theatre Artistic Director Josie Rourke.
