We’re just about to begin our weekly Hall of Fire chat. This weekend the topic is Gandalf: wizard, warrior, white rider. Gather your thoughts and come join the discussion through the link just below.

We’re done! Thanks to everyone who came along and made such a great chat!

In both Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, Gandalf plays a key role in deciding the future of Middle-earth. But is he a commander? A leader? A mentor? A warrior?

These are some of the questions we’ll explore in Hall of Fire tomorrow as we explore the topic: Gandalf: wizard, warrior, white rider.

What does his wandering nature say about his character? That he befriends Hobbits (seemingly insignificant in the greater battle)? That being overlooked for leadership of the White Council bothers him not at all?

That he puts himself in mortal jeopardy to save others? And that he can see that the solution to large problems (Saruron, Smaug) lie not in mighty armies or the feats of elven lords, but in the actions of shire-folk arising to shake the towers and counsels of the great? Hall of Fire is about to kick off — this weekend with a discussion of chapter 11 of The Hobbit. Come join us as we join Thorin and company “On The Doorstep”!

We’re done! Thanks to everyone who joined us. Next weekend we’re having a special chat to discuss Gandalf the Grey!

“They were at the end of their journey, but as far as ever, it seemed, from the end of their quest.”

Tomorrow we’ll be resuming our chapter discussion of The Hobbit in Hall of Fire, joining Thorin and Company as they finally reach their destination — the Lonely Mountain.

The journey is over, the real adventure is about to begin. But why is the party so dispirited? Where is Smaug, the terrible guardian of the treasures of Erebor? Why does Thorin begin by exploring the front gate, and what does it say about the dwarves that they start thinking of sending Bilbo in through the front entrance when the side door initially proves difficult to open? We’re just about to begin our live chat in the Hall of Fire about Hobbit resistance to the One Ring. Bring your thoughts along and join our discussion!

We’re done! Thanks to everyone who joined us today — next weekend The Hobbit: Chapter 11!

Sometimes it seems the sight — or even the mere mention — of the One Ring drives wizards, elves, dwarves, and especially men to the point of obsession.

Boromir, Isildur, Galadriel all feel its lure. Elrond and Gandalf fear its temptation. Saruman succumbs, even without seeing it. It haunts them all, preying on their weakness and ambition.

Yet two small Hobbits show an incredible resilience — carrying the Ring all the way to the heart of Mordor. In fact, Sam gives up the Ring without hardly a second thought. And Bilbo safeguards the ring for decades without turning power-mad.

So this weekend in the Hall of Fire chat we’re asking the question: are Hobbits really more resistant to the One Ring? Continue reading “Hall of Fire chat tomorrow — Hobbit resistance to the Ring”
