Writer and director Peter Briggs spent a little time at the Weta booth during Comic-Con and just as in previous interactions with the TORn staff, he was friendly and funny. Now rumors are circulating that he may be involved in a film with Weta called “Panzer 88.” The premise of the film, talked about by Briggs at a panel during the convention, sounds perfect for Richard Taylor and his team. It reportedly depicts “a German tank crew on the run from a malevolent supernatural entity in the snowy Russian wastes.” Bloody-disgusting.com has a well-written speculative piece on what could be keeping the Peter Jackson / Richard Taylor effects company busy. See the story here.

From firstshowing.net: On Sunday at Comic-Con, Golden Briefcase host Tim Buel and I caught up with Weta Workshop’s creative genius Richard Taylor. If you don’t know who he is, Taylor is one of the top designers and executives from Weta Workshop, the studio that designed all of the creatures, costumes, armor and weapons from Lord of the Rings as well as King Kong, Chronicles of Narnia and District 9. Taylor has won five Oscars in various categories like Costume Design, Makeup and Visual Effects, and is an amazing behind-the-scenes cinematic legend. It was an honor to speak with him and a fun interview to conduct right on the Comic-Con showfloor. More..
Weta writes: The team at Weta would like to welcome fans on TheOneRing.net to come visit us at Comic Con.
Attending from Weta will be Richard Taylor (Creative Director and Co-founder of Weta), Greg Broadmore (Lead conceptual designer for District 9 and creator of Dr Grordbort’s) and his beard, Dave Tremont (Senior Model Maker, and builder of Grond from LOTR) and his tools, Ri Streeter (who “really” runs the workshop) with her I-phone that never stops, Kate McCormick (nice, helpful person lurking behind the counter) and Tim Launder (tall guy) with his long arms. Please come and say Hi, and tell us you post on TORn. Continue reading “Weta invites fans to visit at Comic-Con”
Not officially announced yet by Comic-Con but TheOneRing.net will be kicking off the annual popular culture mega-event known as Comic-Con in San Diego Thursday morning. And the good news is, turned in tickets are NOW AVAILABLE until they sell out again any minute! Click right here immediately and plan to have fun with us Thursday, July 22, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. room 7AB.
Previous years’ panels have had standing-room-only crowds (once infamously featuring the arrest of an unruly patron who couldn’t get in). Occasionally guests drop in (the incomparable Richard Taylor last year) to say hello to fans. We promise to deliver the latest Hobbit movie info and perhaps peek behind the curtain of the potential of the Ultimate LOTR Box Set. (Unauthorized of course!) Join founder Calisuri and staffers Quickbeam and MrCere as they deliver from the stage while staffers Deej and Garfeimao will be in attendance and lending a hand.
Also, catch a variety of TORn-folk all show long at the Weta booth (part of the giant Dark Horse Comics booth) where you can help support TORn with a purchase of our convention exclusive t-shirts!
Five Oscars and four Baftas are recognition for a body of work in the film industry, but a knighthood for Weta Workshop’s Richard Taylor is reward beyond the realm of his imagination. Sir Richard, 45, who has won the movie awards for his work with Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong, has been knighted in this year’s Queen’s Birthday honours list.
It comes after he was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2004, and was Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2006 and 2007, among other honours. More..

Richard Taylor, ONZM, is the creator and head of New Zealand film prop and special effects company Weta Workshop. A close friend of Peter Jackson, he and his company created all of the props, costumes, prosthetics, miniatures and weaponry for Jackson’s epic The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. For his work on the three films, he shared in winning four Academy Awards. This included two for The Fellowship of the Ring in Make Up and Visual Effects, and two for The Return of the King in Costume Design and Make Up.
Michael Pellerin, founder and CEO of Pellerin Multimedia, Inc. (PMI), is an award-winning DVD producer and filmmaker. He and his PMI team have produced more than 100 hours of behind-the-scenes documentaries for DVDs and earned numerous honors, including The DVD Academy’s “Best Disc of the Year” three years in a row for the Collector’s Editions of The Lord of the Rings, produced for New Line Cinema.
For the past five years, PMI, a Los Angeles- and New Zealand-based company, has worked with Academy Award-winning director Peter Jackson on all of his films, producing all the behind-the-scenes material for The Rings trilogy and, most recently, Universal’s King Kong.
