Fantasy Flight Games HobbitNo, no, not the film — it’s a new boardgame by Dr. Reiner Knizia, who designed the recently-republished ‘Lord of the Rings’ cooperative boardgame and many other excellent titles.  Fantasy Flight Games has announced this for ‘Winter 2010’.  Some time back, Knizia indicated that, like the book, this will be a lighter title than ‘Lord of the Rings’ and playable by younger players and non-gamers. 2-5 players represent dwarves who accompany Bilbo on his journey; the goal is to end the game with the most loot!

With the forthcoming cooperative LotR card game and the new edition of the older Knizia LotR co-op (and a likely new edition of the big-box War of the Ring wargame next year), and now this new product, Fantasy Flight is keeping their Tolkien line very much alive.  In any case, this game can keep us occupied on those long Yule nights while waiting for news about a Hobbit movie.

[disclaimer – I (Ostadan) have nothing to do with FFG, but think they’ve done a fine job in their handling of the Tolkien game license, unlike some other companies I could mention…]

This comes to us from Fragland.com via a Gamasutra job posting. Warner Brothers is hiring a director for future gaming development and they specific mention ‘Hobbit’ games. Here’s the posting from Gamasutra:

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Inc. seeks a Director, Marketing for the Marketing department. Position will be responsible for brand development and product marketing activities for the entire portfolio of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit games at Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Position manages high-level cross-company & external partnerships relative to the assigned franchises.

This is obviously good news for the gaming community, but could it also mean that WB is a bit more confident in The Hobbit films happening soon? If you are interested in the position, check out the full job listing at Gamasutra. [WB Job Listing]

Ostadan writes: Fantasy Flight Games, who have been the US publisher of Reiner Knizia’s cooperative Lord of the Rings boardgame for several years now, have announced a new edition of the game in their ‘Silver Line’ format. It features newer (smaller) redesigned game components and a new rulebook, apparently retaining the original game play but more clearly written. They have not announced compatible editions of the expansions that have been published for the original game. The original game has been out of print for a while, and I must say that the new graphics (still featuring John Howe’s artwork) look very good. Note that you can download the rulebook in PDF format.
