Over on Wired, Rhett Allain from Southeastern Louisiana University (who has previously analysed the length of the Balrog’s whip) has turned his number-crunching ability to another thorny problem if Middle-earth physics — could the Black Arrow of the movie actually exert enough force to slay Smaug?
(Of course, it does so because it does so … no additional explanation is needed. But I love that Rhett is using it as a starting point to teach folks about maths and physics.) Continue reading “Could the Black Arrow actually kill a dragon?”

They’ve stitched together all three of their Hobbit tapestries (one for AUJ, one for DOS and one for BOTFA).
You just hone in on any section you want (although be warned, at full zoom there is a noticeable fall-off in resolution quality — and an increase in jagginess — on some sections) and crop out your desired image.
You can also download the image in full if you so desire. It is a pretty neat Triptych, I have to say. Just click the image below to visit WB’s special site.

Today is the day! As we promised you last week, the Smaug the Terrible statue by our friends at Weta Workshop has gone up for order. This was a show stealing piece last year at Comic-Con, and I know many fans including myself have been waiting to get a chance to order this piece. Smaug went up today at 11am PST with a special pre-order price of $699, which is good through January 25th of next year; after that date the price will go up to $749. Another note about the pre-order: when fans place their orders there will be a $100 NRD (Non-Refundable Deposit) at the time of order. Smaug has an edition size of 2000 pieces world-wide, and as per the sign at Comic-Con is due to ship in quarter one of next year. Do not hesitate to order this piece and add what will be a grail into your collection!

I’m not much into box office chest beating, but IB Times has done some interesting number crunching on The Hobbit versus The Lord of the Rings.
Turns out that if The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies hits $942 million US, the total take for the Hobbit films will top that of Peter Jackson’s three The Lord of the Rings films.
That might seem a lot, but maybe it’s not in a series where the US box office take is becoming less important overall. Continue reading “How much does The Battle of The Five Armies need to make for The Hobbit to outsell Lord of the Rings at the box office?”
Our friends over El Anillo Unico have assembled this outstanding analysis of the content of The Battle of the Five Armies preview that you can find in Appendix 9 of The Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition.
We’re delighted to be able to bring you a full English translation of their thoughts and speculation. Note: any mistakes or errors are mine, not theirs.
