The man himself, Guillermo del Toro, who may or may not be directing ‘The Hobbit’, has posted a very curious comment on our own message boards. Del Toro has mentioned recently at a New York convention that an announcement is imminent…decipher what you will from his post!

The big question on everyone’s mind these days seems to be ‘Is Guillermo del Toro directing “The Hobbit”?’ And with a series of enigmatic answers from people like Sir Ian McKellen, and even GDT himself, its no wonder people are desperate for confirmation. A few blogs and movie sites seemed to have jumped the gun this weekend in announcing that GDT himself has confirmed, well…not so fast. While the Mexican director has been very open to the idea of doing it, neither he, or MGM/Warner Bros./New Line have confirmed his involvement. I am certain we will hear something on the matter soon, don’t loose hope!
From hollywoodinsider.ew.com: While interviewing writer-director Guillermo Del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) about his upcoming summer sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army, EW.com chatted him up about his involvement with The Hobbit. While no deal has been set —”We’re still in these protracted negotiations,” Del Toro says — the fantasy fiend did offer a few promising hints. Guillermo Del Toro Talks ‘The Hobbit’…Again
TheOneRing.net reported here at the end of January that Guillermo del Toro was 99 percent sure to direct “The Hobbit”. Since then the Tolkien Estate filed a lawsuit against New Line Cinema (a copy of which can be found here) and the movie studio has been folded up and put in the pocket of its owner Warner Bros. and its bigger parent Time Warner Inc.
After all the speculation and angst, the director of two “Hellboy” films (the second set for a July 11 release) still seems to be the top choice for director and despite the legal uncertainty, the quiet movements by the key players seem to suggest the film will still be made and sooner rather than later. So in this season of waiting, TORn was finally able to contact the fan-friendly director.
