Ever since a “casting call” for The Hobbit found its way on to the internet back in January 2010, fans have been wondering much concerning the role of the Elf-maiden (or alternately, Elf warrior-wench!) who’ll supposedly go by the name of Itaril and fall in love with with a young Elf-lord.

It wasn’t long before fans began speculating the casting for the role and, subsequently, Saoirse Ronan got linked to it. But much fun as the speculation was (and is), neither the rumoured role nor the rumoured casting choice have gone down well with many fans. And whether or not the rumours had a ring of truth to them was anyone’s guess.

Come January 2011 and the media has finally gotten to catching up with Saoirse Ronan and asking her directly concerning the possibility of her being cast in the upcoming films. From RTE.ie:

The Oscar-nominated Irish actress is strongly rumoured to be in talks to play the character Itaril in the films, but she did not reveal any further details at the launch of the IFTAs in Dublin yesterday.

When asked if she would like to play the role, she replied: “Yeah if I was asked, certainly.”

Sir Peter Jackson’s talent scouts will visit Dunedin to fill a tall order for a long list of short people to work on his next big movie. Production company Wingnut Films is looking for short and tall people to play scale doubles for the speaking cast of The Hobbit.

It has announced a casting call for the Edgar Centre on Sunday and yesterday warned aspiring actors who were either too short or too tall not to apply. Scouts would only consider men aged 17-55 who are between 128cm and 158cm tall, or taller than 210cm, and women between 128cm and 153cm tall. Confirming the details, a Wingnut spokesman said scale doubles would appear in some wide shots, or with other actors when those actors needed to be made to look taller or shorter, he said. More..

With the hot and heavy casting news recently people are furiously trying to fill in un cast characters with likely candidates. Former Doctor Who star David Tennant is once again being mentioned as possibly playing Thranduil the Elvenking in the forthcoming Hobbit movie.

Tennant just recently announced that he and former costar Catherine Tate are to appear in a production of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, which opens in London’s Wyndham Theatre from 16th May 2011. They will be playing the roles of combative lovers Beatrice and Benedick in the play, being directed by Bush Theatre Artistic Director Josie Rourke. Orlando Bloomtimesofindia.indiatimes.com and other sources (possibly all from the same source) are reporting that Orlando Bloom has asked, and will receive $1 Million dollars for his 2 minute cameo in the Hobbit Films. While we cannot confirm or deny this bombastic rumor, it begs an interesting question, how much is a possible 2 minute cameo worth?

The same article also makes a throwaway note about Dominic Monaghan joining the cast, lazy reporting or actual scoop? You Decide. Take a look at the article in question here.

Mike Fleming over at Deadline.com is reporting that Andy Serkis is close to signing on for The Hobbit. Any would of course be reprising his role as Gollum. In addition, rumor has it that Sir Christopher Lee is also in talks to reprise his role as Saruman. Saruman was the leader of the White Council, a council of the Wise in Middle-earth that decided to try to oust Sauron from his fortress in Mirkwood forest at the time of The Hobbit. And, if you can stand even more good news, Sir Ian Holm is also rumored to be in talks to appear in the movies as an older Bilbo. Read more about this at Deadline.com

Meanwhile we will try to get the news about Andy directly from Andy himself, stay tuned!
