Peter Jackson has posted a new note on his Facebook page today that confirms the casting of Luke Evans as Bard, as well as Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of Smaug. He has also announced two new cast members. Barry Humphries will be portraying a completely CGI Goblin King…and…wait for it…the biggest news is LOST star Evangeline Lilly will be Tauriel. PJ describes Tauriel as a Woodland Elf, ‘Her name means ‘daughter of Mirkwood’ and, beyond that, we must leave you guessing! (No, there is no romantic connection to Legolas.)‘ So there you have it, some huge news from PJ today. Jump on over to his Facebook account to read the full note. [Read on] What do you think? News is just hitting via Deadline.com that Luke Evans has been cast as Bard in the upcoming The Hobbit movies:
EXCLUSIVE TO DEADLINE.com: Luke Evans has bagged the role of Bard in The Hobbit, a last major part that Peter Jackson hadn’t cast in a production that’s underway in New Zealand. Bard the Grim is a skilled archer, and the heir of King Girion of Dale. The king was killed by the talking dragon Smaug. The character plays a greater role in the second film, and is somewhat reminiscent of the action-hero exploits of Viggo Mortensen’s Aragorn, I’m told.
What do you think of the choice? Does he have the ‘Bard’ look? Sound off! For the complete article, including a summary of his past work, jump on over to Deadline.com! [Read on] (Thanks to Ringer Jared for the heads up!)

Sir Ian McKellen has earlier today put up a new blog post titled “Congratulations, dear Watson” on his personal blog “Notes From Imladris” chronicling his journey filming The Hobbit.
Those following TORn will recall our coverage from last week of Martin Freeman letting slip the news that Benedict Cumberbatch has landed a role in the films.
McKellen’s post today confirms Freeman’s statement, and also goes a bit further with a little teaser of the potential role Cumberbatch has been cast in.
Now, what can he [Benedict Cumberbatch] be playing in The Hobbit?
Philippa Boyens showed me a snippet of his screen-test, played in close-up into the camera. It was electrifying, vocally and facially. Yes, what can he be playing?
So for now the question remains… what role has Cumberbatch been cast in? As always, our message boards are rife with speculation, and you’re welcome to join in.
Peter Jackson has started answering fan-submitted questions on his official Facebook page, and the first answer is a big one! Since learning there would be two films, most of us here at TheOneRing.net were dreaming we’d get to see The White Council and the attack on Dol Guldur. Well, as it turns out, we will! Not to take anything away from PJ’s official post, we won’t reveal more here in this article. (including the exclusive picture of The White Council). You’ll have to jump over to Facebook and see it for yourself. And don’t forget to ‘like’ TheOneRing.net on Facebook to get all the latest Hobbit updates! [PJ’s Answer] [TheOneRing.net on Facebook]
