A reminder that “The Lord of the Rings – The Fellowship of the Ring” will be shown this coming Monday, June 30, by the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences as part of their “Great to be Nominated” series. Since we first reported this story here the participants in the discussion panel have been finalized and what a panel it will be! From VFX World.com:
“Following the screening, producer Barrie Osborne, executive producer Mark Ordesky, film editor John Gilbert, supervising sound editor Ethan Van der Ryn, Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor Jim Rygiel and U.S. casting director Victoria Burrows will participate in a discussion about the film.”

On prime time television last night in the U.S. the American Film Institute named “The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings,” as the #2 fantasy movie of all time as part of its program of the 10 best films in 10 genres. “The Wizard of Oz,” won the top fantasy film ever according to the group which releases “top” lists occasionally that stir up discussion about films. Cast members Sean Astin and Dominic Monaghan each were featured in clips talking about FOTR as well as other films included in the program. Weta recently opened its “Weta Cave” to give visitors something cool to see when they make the journey to the gentle neighborhood in Wellington where one of the world’s most important film special effects houses sits. I visited the Cave a few weeks before it officially opened and believe me, I felt like I was walking sacred movie-production ground. Ostadan writes: OK, this is pretty geeky even my my standards, I have come across an announcement for a lecture, in Esperanto, on ‘The Sources of The Lord of the Rings’ by Anna Lowenstein, which will take place in the ‘virtual world’ of ‘Second Life’ on Sunday, 15 June, at 20:00 GMT (1pm Pacific).
Second Life…Esperanto…Tolkien.
I don’t think you can get much more esoteric. Oh well, I’ll probably be there…

The Salem, WI Community Library is putting on a program called Frodo Fest from September 19-20, and in preparation for that is asking for volunteers to help create pennants, murals, and more to serve as a backdrop to Frodo Fest. Sharin sends in this information for anyone living in the vicinity of the Twin Cities: In a little more than a week, I will be offering a Tolkien course in the English department at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. The course is entitled “Tolkien: Medieval or Modern?” This three-week Mayterm meets from May 27-June 12 (M-Th from 9:05-1:10). There are still a few seats available.
