Time is running out to submit your story for this months Rewrite Tolkien contest, featuring characters from The Hobbit in the style of Edgar Allan Poe. Contest deadline is Monday, October 28th at 12:00pm (noon), Eastern Standard Time. The winner will have their story read live on the first TORn Tuesday of November. Back at the start of October, we told you about Denny’s exciting contest to find Middle-earth’s greatest fan. For US residents, this is a chance to win flights, accommodation and two tickets to see The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug world premiere in Los Angeles at the start of December.
There’s only a week to go to submit your video entry to win this incredible, once in a lifetime prize – the contest closes on October 31st. And because we love to give stuff away, we here at TheOneRing.net have an additional incentive for you!
As part of their new Hobbit menu, Denny’s have created some ‘dwarvish gold’ coins. These will not be available in restaurants; they are an exclusive piece of film memorabilia that fans won’t be able to purchase anywhere – and they come affixed to a Denny’s 20% off entire guest check coupon! The only way to get one of these coins will be through contests and giveaways such as this. To get your hands on one of these exclusive collectibles, here’s what you have to do:
Create your video and upload it to the Denny’s Fan Quest contest – you can find all the rules and details here.
Once you’ve entered the competition, tweet @theoneringnet with the words ‘I’ve entered Dennysfanquest.com’, using the hashtag #MiddleEarthsDiner
That’s it! When the competition closes, we’ll pick at random twenty tweets from those sent to us, with the hashtag and the right phrase. Those twenty folks will each be sent a piece of dwarvish treasure, courtesy of Denny’s!

This time last week TORn staffers were busy getting set up for New York ComicCon. Now it’s over for another year, and we’ve had time to draw breath and take stock of the great time we had there. TheOneRing.net was once again the only Hobbit content at the con; we’re always proud to represent Tolkien fandom! Our booth (complete with a ‘ring’ of dwarves mounted on the top; well done 
those who got that up there!) drew many folks eager for some Middle-earth goodies, and we were able to satisfy their craving with our own tshirts and buttons, as well as Weta collectibles, Cryptozoic games and fabulous giveaways from Weta, Sideshow and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. It is always a pleasure to meet fellow fans, and this being the third year of New York ComicCon, there are familiar faces whom we are glad to see each year! There were of course many wonderful costumes at the con, and Middle-earth was well represented; we even had Gandalf the Grey hanging out at TORn’s booth for a while! My personal favourite was ‘Shire of the Apes’…
As you may recall we teamed up with Sideshow Collectibles to give away one of their massive Sauron Premium Format Statues. After many entries its time to finally announce the winner of this contest. The lucky Ringer who will be having one of these 3 foot tall pieces shipped from our friends at Sideshow Collectibles is Ben S. of Gurnee, IL. Our good friends at Harper Collins – Tolkien publishers in the UK – are running a competition where they want to see YOUR version of Tolkien’s mighty dragon Smaug! They say:
‘Smaug is an incredible and mysterious character, his sleep and anger equally frightful. J.R.R. Tolkien described and illustrated the dragon with awe-inspiring words and artworks. Now it’s your turn to create your version of Smaug, as you imagined it when you first read J.R.R. Tolkien’s descriptions. Illustrators, designers, Hobbit fans of all ages – anyone can enter the competition and submit their Smaug’s artworks to win a fantastic grand prize!’
That prize is a copy of your own illustration, beautifully mounted on canvas! The winner will also get a collection of Harper Collins Hobbit books. Ten runners-up will win an exclusive, deluxe print of their artworks.
Get out those pens, pencils, inks, paint and whatever else takes your fancy, grab a copy of The Hobbit, reread Tolkien’s description of the fiery worm, and get illustrating! The contest runs until December 13th, when (in many countries) we’ll finally be able to see Peter Jackson’s Smaug in all his glory on the big screen!
