Our chapter-by-chapter discussions on the middle installment of J.R.R Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings are coming to a close. Later today in Hall of Fire at 5pm EST we’ll be discussing the chapter that takes Frodo, Sam and Gollum to the edge of Ithilien as the Black Land itself broods and gathers its strength for some vast assault upon the Free Peoples of Middle-earth.
My scouts and watchers have all returned, even some that have crept within sight of the Morannon. They all find a strange thing. The land is empty. Nothing is on the road, and no sound of foot, or horn, or bowstring is anywhere to be heard. A waiting silence broods above the Nameless Land. I do not know what this portends. But the time draws swiftly to some great conclusion. Storm is coming.

This Saturday at 5pm EST, Hall of Fire resume Two Towers chapter chats with Frodo and Sam still with the Men of Gondor at Henneth Annun. Frodo’s own fate — and that of the Quest — remains undecided, yet he is summoned in the small hours of the morning by Faramir to discover that he must, himself, to decide the fate of another.
`The creature is wretched and hungry,’ said Frodo, `and unaware of his danger. And Gandalf, your Mithrandir, he would have bidden you not to slay him for that reason, and for others. He forbade the Elves to do so. I do not know clearly why, and of what I guess I cannot speak openly out here. But this creature is in some way bound up with my errand. Faramir smiled grimly. `Then you would grieve to learn that Boromir is dead? ‘
‘I would grieve indeed,’ said Frodo. Then catching the look in Faramir’s eyes, he faltered. ‘Dead?’ he said. ‘Do you mean that he is dead, and that you knew it? You have been trying to trap me in words, playing with me? Or are you now trying to snare me with a falsehood?’

This Saturday (at 6pm ET (New York time)) Hall of Fire will be talking about the valiant shieldmaiden of the Rohirrim — Éowyn, the White Lady of Rohan.
For a while she was silent, as if pondering what this might mean. Then suddenly she laid her hand on his arm. ‘You are a stern lord and resolute,’ she said; ‘and thus do men win renown.’ She paused. ‘Lord.’ she said, ‘if you must go, then let me ride in your following. For I am weary of skulking in the hills, and wish to face peril and battle.’
