Late in the Third Age, Aragorn served in the armies of King Thengel of Rohan (Théoden’s father) and of Steward Ecthelion II of Gondor (father of Denethor). To conceal his identity, he used the pseudonym “Thorongil”.
This Saturday at 6pm ET in the Hall of Fire, we’ll be chatting about this period of Aragorn’s life.
Other tasks now call me, lord, and much time and many perils must pass, ere I come again to Gondor, if that be my fate.

This Saturday at 6pm ET Hall of Fire will be chatting about the 2009 Middle-earth fan-film The Hunt for Gollum.
Directed by Chris Bouchard, The Hunt for Gollum is based on the appendices of The Lord of the Rings and tells the story of Aragorn son of Arathorn, and his pursuit of the creature Gollum at the behest of Gandalf the Grey. Continue reading “Hall of Fire this weekend: fan-film The Hunt for Gollum”
This weekend (Saturday December 12 at 6pm EST), Hall of Fire will be chatting about the Noldorin elf often often considered the antithesis of Fëanor — his half-brother, Fingolfin.
Fëanor was the mightiest in skill of word and of hand, more learned than his brothers; his spirit burned as a flame. Fingolfin was the strongest, the most steadfast, and the most valiant. Finarfin was the fairest, and the most wise of heart…

This weekend (Saturday November 21 at 6pm EST), Hall of Fire will be discussing the life and achievements of that most talented (and, perhaps, most-troubled) of elves, Fëanor.
Here once was light, that the Valar begrudged to Middle-earth, but now dark levels all. Shall we mourn here deedless for ever, a shadow-folk, mist-haunting, dropping vain tears in the thankless sea? Or shall we return to our home?
In Cuiviénen sweet ran the waters under unclouded stars, and wide lands lay about, where a free people might walk. There they lie still and await us who in our folly forsook them.
Come away! Let the cowards keep this city!

This weekend (Saturday November 14 at 6pm EST), Hall of Fire will be going wizarding as we examine the nature of those who were sent to Middle-earth to oppose Sauron — the Istari.
Wizard is a translation of Quenya istar (Sindarin ithron): one of the members of an “order” (as they call it), claiming to possess, and exhibiting, eminent knowledge of the history and nature of the World.
The translation (through suitable in its relation to “wise” and other ancient words of knowing, similar to that of istar in Quenya) is not perhaps happy, since Heren Istarion or “Order of Wizards” was quite distinct from “wizards” and “magicians” of later legend; they belonged solely to the Third Age and then departed, and none save maybe Elrond, Círdan and Galadriel discovered of what kind they were or whence they came. The seven sons of Fëanor — Maedhros, Maglor, Celegorm, Caranthir, Curufin, Amrod and Amras. Famous, or notorious, in Tolkien’s stories — depending on your view. This weekend, they’re our topic in Hall of Fire.
[Feanor’s] seven sons leapt straightway to his side and took the selfsame vow together, and red as blood shone their drawn swords in the glare of the torches. They swore an oath which none shall break, and none should take, by the name even of Ilúvatar, calling the Everlasting Dark upon them if they kept it not…
