Barliman's Chat A couple of weeks ago we discussed our Middle-earth heroes on the Hall of Fire. So I thought, why not focus on villains too?

So this Saturday at 6pm we’ll be asking today the question: who is your favourite villain, and why?

“I am the Elder King: Melkor, first and mightiest of the Valar, who was before the world, and made it. The shadow of my purpose lies upon Arda, and all that is in it bends slowly and surely to my will.

But upon all whom you love my thought shall weigh as a cloud of Doom, and it shall bring them down into darkness and despair. Wherever they go, evil shall arise. Whenever they speak, their words shall bring ill counsel. Continue reading “Hall of Fire this weekend: your favourite Middle-earth villain!”

Barliman's Chat This Saturday at 6pm ET, we’ll be turning our attention back to The Return of the King in The Hall of Fire as the hobbits embark on the final leg of their journey back to The Shire.

‘There is no real going back. Though I may come to the Shire, it will not seem the same; for I shall not be the same. I am wounded with knife, sting, and tooth, and a long burden. Where shall I find rest?’

The Return of the King: Book VI, Chapter VII: Homeward Bound

Gandalf and the Hobbits finally reach Bree after a long but uneventful journey. There they find Butterbur largely unchanged… but the news is that things just aren’t quite right in this part of Middle-earth. Barliman's Chat In Tolkien’s Middle-earth, heroism appears in all shapes and sizes. But who is your favourite? And why?

Those are the questions we’ll be asking today at 6pm ET in The Hall of Fire.

‘But if you take it freely, I will say that your choice is right; and though all the mighty elf-friends of old, Hador, and Húrin, and Túrin, and Beren himself were assembled together your seat should be among them.’
Elrond half-elven to Frodo Baggins.

Barliman's Chat This Saturday at 6pm ET, Hall of Fire rejoins our four heroic Hobbits as they begin the long journey home to the Shire.

‘I know what you have come to say, Frodo: you wish to return to your own home. Well, dearest friend, the tree grows best in the land of its sires; but for you in all the lands of the West there will ever be a welcome. And though your people have had little fame in the legends of the great, they will now have more renown than any wide realms that are no more.’ Continue reading “Hall of Fire this Saturday: Many Partings”

Barliman's Chat Throughout its history, the One Ring comes to different people of many races. It tempts them all, preying on their individual weaknesses and ambitions. Some fall to its lure, some fear even to touch it. Yet two small Hobbits carry the Ring all the way to the heart of Mordor.

Thus, an interesting question arises: were Hobbits in general more resistant to the One Ring? And, if so, why?

More, does this extend to all the rings of power that the Noldor of Eregion forged in the Second Age? Continue reading “Hall of Fire this Saturday: the nature of Hobbit resistance to the Rings of Power”
